Preparation for RFID Certification Exam

About the RFID Certification Exam

THE RFID PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTE CERTIFICATION EXAM

In the early days of RFID technology, the knowledge of these systems, what they do, how they work, how they are deployed and all the little details and difficulties with each one were only a privilege of the few. Fast forward to today and RFID technology has not only gained acceptance and relative wide-spread use, but the knowledge about the technology and how its deployed has also been much more accessible not just due to RFID training companies but also due to technology providers and their great blogs and publications. Because how else can we use this great technology if we don’t know enough about it?

So the knowledge and information is there but what has been lacking is some kind of streamlining, standardization and measurement of this knowledge that can be applicable to candidates in the industry. As we have done many RFID classes and met thousands of students, we know that they are indeed very knowledgeable but usually only in their vertical or niche and lack the overall understanding and comprehensive knowledge of the technology of all its parts, features and as a whole.

And this is what also the founders of the RFID Professional Institute must have seen and therefore decided to put out a certification that would help provide base of broad RFID knowledge for RFID professionals. So they came up with a concept introducing several levels of certifications starting with the Associate Level, which focuses on principles of RFID, common terms and their meanings and factors that influence system deployment and its performance. On top of this basic certification, there will be more levels, all the way to the Expert level.

THE RFID PROFESSIONAL INSTITUTE CERTIFICATION EXAM

  • RFID Professional Institute Associate Exam – already developed.
  • RFID Professional Institute Professional Exam – in preparation.
  • RFID Professional Institute Certified Specialist Exam (separate exams for passive (LF, HF & UHF), active and software – in future.
  • RFID Professional Institute Certified RFID Expert – in future.

FOCUS OF THE RFID ASSOCIATE CERTIFICATION EXAM

This exam focuses on establishing that the candidate has a good knowledge of the principles of RFID systems, common terms and their meaning, and the many factors which can influence how well such a system performs for a particular application.

The main emphasis is not given to testing on how to design and deploy the RFID systems (this is focus of the next level the Professional Exam), but mostly on the underlying knowledge that is necessary for a proper design and deployment, including RFID basics, components of RFID systems and what role they play as well as how they are applied in various applications.

HOW TO TAKE THE EXAM

Currently only one option is available:

  1. Take the exam at an RFID Event such as RFID Journal Live!. Next scheduled exam is at RFID Journal LIVE! 2018. Check here for schedule.

Please check Institute website for latest updates on addition of test centers.

EXAM FORMAT

The exam takes 90 minutes (time does not stop for breaks) and consists of 9 sections, each section corresponding to a particular subject area.

Each question is multiple choice and more than one answer may be correct. You can answer questions in any order, you can get back to it later and you can mark it for review.

Tip: We suggest that if you are not sure of a correct answer, don’t spend too much time on a question, mark it for review and return to it after you have answered all the other questions.

PASSING THE EXAM

The general pass level is score of 70% and more. However, it is a provisional score and the formal score and the actual pass and fail is determined within 21 days of the exam due to occasional curve adjustments. You will be notified by email and by official letter of the score by the Institute and you will receive an official certificate if you pass.

THE SCOPE OF THE EXAM

The scope of examination for Associate level is the following:

  1. What is RFID? – RFID system types, including active, passive and battery-assisted RFID systems and related technologies. It also covers the performance characteristics of these systems and RF fundamentals.
  2. Architecture Components – The components that make up a typical RFID system and the roles each component plays.
  3. Privacy, Safety & Security – Issues related to privacy, safety and security that may arise in an RFID deployment.
  4. RFID Standards and Regulations – Organizations that provide the standards that are used in RFID and the regulations in place around the world that govern the use of the technology.
  5. Ecosystems and the Roles of Service Providers – The roles of services providers related to an RFID deployment and the ecosystem that makes up the RFID industry.
  6. Applications – Common applications for different types of RFID systems across different industries.
  7. RFID Evaluation & Selection – Methods for evaluating and selecting different RFID system components.
  8. Solution design – Understanding the use of different types of tags and readers, their placement and how data flows through an RFID system.
  9. Deploy Steps – The basics of the process of deploying an RFID system.
